The Basics of Bat Detection at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Garden November 9


Port St Lucie – Tuesday 18 October 2022: UF/IFAS St. Lucie County Extension, in conjunction with the Rio Lindo Garden Club and Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, will present “Bat Detecting Basics” on Wednesday, November 9 from 7:30-9 p.m.

During this event, Ken Gioeli, Natural Resources Officer for the St. Lucie County Extension UF/IFAS, will review the basics of bat biology and use bat detectors during a nocturnal search. of bats. The cost is $20 per person.

Have you ever wondered what kind of bats live in Florida? Head to the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens for an informative conversation about bats with guest speaker Ken Gioeli. Learn about bats as fascinating, beautiful, and misunderstood mammals and their role in a healthy ecosystem. Gioeli will bring bat detectors to show attendees how to detect bat echolocation at night while walking through the beautiful grounds of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens. Live bats will not be featured during the presentation, but are likely to be spotted during the stroll through the gardens.

Gioeli is a faculty member at the University of Florida/IFAS as the Natural Resources Extension Officer for St. Lucie County. It offers natural resource-related educational programs for extension volunteers such as Florida Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists, as well as general landlords, community organizations, schools, and government agencies. Gioeli received her Masters in Agricultural Education and Communications from the University of Florida and a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Education. He has conducted research on vampire bats through the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) – a collaboration between UF, Duke University and Universidad de Costa Rica.
