The Skiles 429 fire is located northeast of Clayton and approximately 3 miles west of the Oklahoma border in Union County. The fire is estimated at over 1,000 acres and 0% contained. The fire is fueled by extremely dry conditions and strong gusts of wind. Fossils include grass and pinon-juniper. The Red Cross has set up evacuation shelters in Boise City and Wheeless, Oklahoma for about 25 residents. There are no reports of evacuations from the New Mexico side. The Skiles 429 fire was first reported just after 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon (4/29). Many resources are on the premises of the Forestry Division and Union County. The cause is still under investigation.
