MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds families, mentors and young hunters that there is still time to plan ahead for the 2022 Youth Turkey Hunt that will take place across the country. Status from April 16 to 17.
Each year, the Turkey Youth Hunt gives hunters under the age of 16 the opportunity to gain valuable hunting experience and experience the excitement of turkey season before the regular season begins.
The wild turkey is truly one of Wisconsin’s wildlife management success stories. A key component of the success of the Wild Turkey Stewardship Program can be attributed to hunters through their purchase of the Wild Turkey Stamp which provides vital financial support to provide future turkey stewardship and hunting opportunities in Wisconsin.
What Young Hunters Need to Participate in the Youth Turkey Hunt
There are a few special requirements to participate in the Youth Turkey Hunt.
Young hunters must have a spring turkey license, stamp and harvest authorization valid for any period, all available online through Go Wild, the DNR license portal, or in person at DNR Service Centers and licensing agents throughout the state.
Young hunters must either have completed their Hunter Education or participate in the Mentored Hunting Program to be eligible for the Youth Turkey Hunt.
To participate in the supervised hunting program, young people must be accompanied by a qualified adult aged 18 or over, and the adult cannot accompany more than two young hunters at a time. More information on mentoring a hunter is available on the MNR website.
All hunters must have a valid spring turkey license, turkey stamp and harvest permits. You can use a Harvest Authorization for any time during the Youth Hunting Weekend, but you must hunt within the Turkey Management Zone indicated on their Harvest Authorization. If you do not harvest turkeys during the turkey hunt, you can use the harvest authorization during the period indicated on the harvest authorization.
Complete regulations, harvest registration information, and other useful turkey hunting information are available on the MNR website.
Harvesting authorizations and registration
Young hunters may use a harvest authorization for any period during the youth hunting weekend, but must hunt within the turkey management zone indicated on their harvest authorization.
The harvest authorizations not fulfilled during the hunt for youngsters can then be fulfilled during the period and in the area indicated. Complete information, including youth hunting rules and regulations, can be found on the MNR website.
Harvest registration remains an essential part of wildlife population management and registration of turkeys is mandatory, including when hunting young. Hunters must register their turkey by 5 p.m. the day after retrieval at gamereg.wi.gov or by calling 1-844-426-3734. Hunters will need the number listed on their Harvest Authorization to register their turkey.
